The School of Applied Functional Medicine

Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing an advanced Functional Medicine education is an important professional decision. Explore answers to some of the most common questions practitioners ask about SAFM, our learning experience, certification, eligibility, and enrollment.

Is SAFM Right for Me?

SAFM is designed for health and wellness professionals who want to deepen their clinical knowledge and develop greater capability in applying Functional Medicine principles.

Applicants should be at least 18 years old and hold a license or certification in a medical or wellness professional modality. Relevant professional experience working with patients or clients is also expected.

You do not need to currently work in a Functional Medicine practice. Relevant experience may come from many different healthcare roles, practice settings, and business models.

Applicants should also have a solid working knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry, or be willing to pursue additional foundational learning where needed.

Because professional backgrounds and circumstances vary, some applicants may be asked to speak with our team to clarify their experience and confirm program eligibility.

Not sure whether your background qualifies? We encourage you to apply so our team can help determine whether SAFM is the right fit.

No. You do not need to currently practice Functional Medicine or have previous Functional Medicine training to begin your SAFM education.

Our students come to SAFM with different levels of experience. Some are just beginning to integrate a systems-based, root-cause approach into their work. Others have previous Functional Medicine education and are looking for greater clinical depth, stronger reasoning skills, and more confidence applying what they know.

SAFM’s curriculum is intentionally progressive, helping you develop a strong foundation before advancing into increasingly complex concepts and clinical application.

You don’t need to arrive at SAFM already knowing Functional Medicine.

What matters more is your desire to understand health and chronic disease more deeply, challenge one-size-fits-all thinking, and develop a more systems-based approach to supporting the people you serve.

SAFM’s curriculum progresses intentionally from foundational concepts into more advanced clinical application, allowing you to build your knowledge and confidence over time.

If you’re interested but aren’t sure whether SAFM is the right next step for your professional background or goals, we encourage you to apply or connect with our team.

Learning at SAFM

Yes. SAFM is designed with busy, working medical and wellness professionals in mind.

The program combines self-paced coursework with live learning opportunities, including case study calls, peer discussions, and educational updates. Live participation is not required, and sessions are recorded so you can learn around your professional and personal commitments.

On average, students dedicate approximately 8–12 hours per week to their SAFM studies, although this varies based on educational background, professional experience, study habits, and individual pace.

You have flexibility in how you move through the curriculum while still benefiting from a thoughtfully sequenced learning experience designed to build lasting knowledge.

Students who steadily progress through the program at approximately 8–12 hours of study per week typically complete all requirements for the Applied Functional Medicine Certification (AFMC) within approximately 2.5–3 years.

The certification pathway includes:

Your individual timeline may vary based on your educational background, professional experience, study pace, enrollment timing, participation in qualifying learning experiences, and AFMC examination windows.

Our goal isn’t simply to move you through material quickly. It’s to help you develop knowledge you can retain, integrate, and apply.

SAFM is a fully virtual program designed to give busy practitioners flexibility without sacrificing connection or interactive learning.

Coursework includes video and audio instruction, slide decks, and supporting course materials. Downloadable course documents and slide decks are available where applicable.

Live case study calls, peer discussions, and educational updates are also part of the SAFM learning environment, but live participation is not required. Sessions are recorded and archived so you can join live when your schedule allows and use replays when it doesn’t.

SAFM gives you flexibility to progress through coursework at a pace that works with your professional and personal commitments while maintaining a thoughtfully sequenced learning experience.

Course content becomes available progressively so you can build a strong understanding of foundational concepts before moving into increasingly complex material. Some elements of the certification pathway, including examinations and certain learning requirements, are time-bound.

Our goal is durable knowledge and advanced capability, not simply moving through the curriculum as quickly as possible.

Although SAFM is virtual, you aren’t learning alone.

Full Access includes multiple layers of support designed to help you navigate both your education and the practical realities of a multi-year learning journey. Students have opportunities to connect, ask questions, learn from peers, and strengthen their understanding through Open Coaching Calls, Clinical Q&A, Masterminds, the SAFM Community Hub, Program Jump Starts, and other live and collaborative learning experiences.

Student Support helps with the operational side of your SAFM experience, including questions related to enrollment, billing, program access, scheduling, policies, and technical issues. Student Experience Coaches provide more personalized guidance to help you develop a learning plan, prioritize next steps, maintain momentum, and make the most of the SAFM experience based on your goals, pace, and life circumstances.

Together, these resources are designed to give you the flexibility of virtual education while still providing the guidance, community, and personalized support needed to continue making meaningful progress.

Clinical Learning & Application

SAFM is designed to change more than what you know. It is designed to strengthen how you think.

You’ll learn to look beyond isolated symptoms and diagnoses and explore the interconnected physiology, lifestyle, environment, nutrition, medications, and personal history that may be contributing to an individual’s health.

As you progress, you’ll develop frameworks for recognizing patterns, identifying potential root contributors, prioritizing what matters most, and approaching complex cases with greater clarity.

How you apply your SAFM education will depend on your existing professional role, credentials, and scope of practice.

Clinical reasoning is at the heart of the SAFM approach.

Functional Medicine isn’t simply about replacing conventional protocols with Functional Medicine protocols. Complex patients rarely fit neatly into a one-size-fits-all approach.

SAFM teaches you to understand underlying physiology, recognize interconnected patterns, ask better questions, and think critically about what may be driving dysfunction for the individual in front of you.

The goal is not rote memorization. It is developing durable knowledge and deeper understanding that you can draw upon as you navigate increasingly complex cases.

Developing greater confidence with complex cases is an important part of the SAFM learning experience.

Many practitioners come to SAFM with significant knowledge and experience but still find themselves asking: Where do I start? What matters most? How do these pieces connect?

Through progressive coursework and case-based learning, SAFM helps you strengthen your ability to recognize patterns, understand interconnected physiology, and prioritize potential contributors rather than viewing each symptom in isolation.

Confidence develops through both knowledge and application, which is why SAFM emphasizes opportunities to practice thinking through real-world clinical complexity throughout your education.

Lab work is integrated into the SAFM learning experience as one of many clinical tools practitioners learn to evaluate thoughtfully within a patient’s or client’s larger health picture.

Students have opportunities to learn about both blood chemistry and Functional Medicine labs, with lab learning intentionally connected to relevant coursework.

The emphasis isn’t simply on ordering more testing. It’s on understanding when lab data may be useful, how it relates to physiology and the broader case, and how to think critically about what results may mean.

Prior to certification, access to SAFM lab partners and panels is intended for personal, course-related use. State, national, and international laws regarding lab work apply, as does each practitioner’s individual scope of practice.

Why SAFM?

SAFM is designed to help practitioners move beyond learning Functional Medicine concepts to developing the capability and confidence to apply them in real-world practice.

Our approach is distinguished by three things:

Capability through practical application.
We go beyond teaching what to know. SAFM helps practitioners understand the interconnected physiology behind complex health concerns and develop the clinical reasoning to determine how and when to apply that knowledge.

Confidence through continuous case practice.
Knowledge becomes more powerful when you practice using it. Case-based learning is woven throughout the SAFM experience, giving you repeated opportunities to work through real-world complexity, connect the dots, and strengthen your clinical decision-making.

Collaboration across healthcare disciplines.
SAFM brings together practitioners from diverse healthcare and wellness backgrounds because complex health requires multiple perspectives. Students learn with and from one another, building a collaborative community where different modalities contribute meaningfully to better patient and client care.

The result is more than Functional Medicine knowledge. It’s the ability to think critically, navigate complexity, and apply what you know with greater confidence in the work you already do.

SAFM’s curriculum is developed through interdisciplinary collaboration among clinicians, scientists, educators, researchers, and subject matter experts.

Clinical content is developed, reviewed, and validated by professionals with relevant subject-matter expertise, while specialists in curriculum development, instructional design, learning science, and systems thinking help ensure complex concepts are taught clearly and effectively.

SAFM’s Scientific and Clinical Education Team includes professionals from across healthcare and science, including physicians, PhD scientists and researchers, naturopathic doctors, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, nutrition professionals, physician assistants, pharmacists, health coaches, and other healthcare professionals.

The rigor of SAFM’s educational experience is further supported by continuing education accreditation through nationally recognized accrediting organizations, including ACCME, ANCC, ACPE, and NBHWC. AFMC certification standards and examinations are also overseen by SAFM’s Scientific Review Council.

This multidisciplinary approach helps ensure SAFM education remains evidence-informed, clinically relevant, and grounded in real-world application.

Career & Professional Growth

Practitioners use their SAFM education across many different professional settings and roles.

Some integrate Functional Medicine principles into an existing clinical practice. Others use their education to deepen their work with patients or clients, build or expand a practice, collaborate with other healthcare professionals, or develop a greater area of focus within their existing career.

Your ability to apply specific Functional Medicine tools and approaches will always depend on your existing credentials, licensure or certification, scope of practice, and applicable regulations.

Yes. Practice implementation is an integrated part of the SAFM experience rather than something that begins only after completing the clinical curriculum.

Activator, SAFM’s practice implementation and activation pathway, begins early in the student journey and continues alongside the clinical curriculum. It is designed to help practitioners translate what they are learning into meaningful action in real-world practice.

Through Activator curriculum, Activator Jump Starts, Practice & Business Q&A, facilitated Masterminds, the SAFM Community Hub, and practical tools and resources, students receive guidance on the real-world questions that arise when implementing Functional Medicine and building or growing a sustainable practice.

Topics may include patient communication, workflow, implementation strategies, practice operations, business development, and other practical considerations that help bridge the gap between clinical knowledge and successful practice.

This parallel approach allows practitioners to begin doing the work as they learn it, strengthening both capability and confidence through real-world application.

Certification & Credentials

Students who successfully complete the certification pathway may earn the Applied Functional Medicine Certification (AFMC).

The AFMC pathway progresses alongside the Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 clinical curriculum. As students complete each level of the curriculum, they become eligible to pursue the corresponding AFMC certification examination.

The certification pathway includes:

Students must successfully complete all three AFMC Level examinations to be awarded the AFMC credential and certificate.

Certification is an important milestone within the broader SAFM practitioner-development journey rather than the end of the learning experience. Maintaining the AFMC credential includes ongoing recertification through continuing professional development and AFMC Learning Credits.

The AFMC credential is designed to complement a practitioner’s existing professional credentials and does not grant an additional license, modality, or scope of practice.

No. SAFM education and the AFMC credential do not grant or expand a professional license, modality, specialty status, or legal scope of practice.

The AFMC credential is designed to complement your existing licensure or certification. How you apply SAFM’s teachings professionally must align with your individual credentials, scope of practice, practice setting, and applicable laws and regulations.

Because requirements vary considerably by profession and geography, SAFM does not provide individual scope-of-practice guidance. We recommend consulting the governing body for your license or modality and obtaining qualified legal guidance where appropriate.

Once attained, AFMC certification is valid for three years.

To maintain the credential, practitioners must complete 34 AFMC Learning Credits every three years through qualifying SAFM educational opportunities.

Practitioners who do not complete recertification requirements by their three-year recertification date will have their AFMC certification status changed to inactive. Additional reactivation requirements may apply if recertification is not achieved within one year of that date.

Continuing Education

Yes. SAFM offers a variety of continuing education (CE) credit opportunities for eligible health professionals.

Availability and eligibility depend on your professional modality and the specific SAFM educational offering. SAFM works with nationally recognized accrediting organizations to provide continuing education opportunities across multiple healthcare professions.

Because requirements vary by profession, we recommend reviewing our current Continuing Education information to determine which opportunities may apply to your credentials.

Yes. Full Access includes an initial minimum 12-month commitment.

SAFM is intentionally designed as a longitudinal educational experience built around layered learning, practical application, community, and continued practitioner development. Meaningful capability and confidence develop over time rather than through a short-term or accelerated educational experience.

The initial 12-month commitment gives students time to establish a strong educational foundation, engage with the integrated SAFM experience, and begin translating what they are learning into real-world practice.

After fulfilling the minimum commitment, students can evaluate their continued participation based on their educational and professional goals.
